Fishing for Funny Poets: Comedy Poetry Competition

Date: November 16th and 17th

Location: Australian Poetry Hall of Fame 144 Bradley St Guyra.

About the Competition:

Are you a wordsmith with a wicked sense of humour? Do you have a knack for turning everyday life into comedic gold? If so, then the Fishing for Funny Poets: Comedy Poetry Competition is just for you!

We're searching for the funniest, most original, and most entertaining poetry out there. Whether you prefer to perform your work on stage or submit it in written form, we want to hear from you.

Categories:

  • Performance: Showcase your comedic timing and stage presence as you deliver your poetry live.

  • Written: Submit your written poetry for evaluation by our panel of judges.

Prizes:

  • Monetary prizes will be awarded for the best poem. The winner, as well as those judged 'Highly Commended' or 'Commended', will receive a Certificate.  How to Enter:

  • Humor

Rules and Regulations:

Comedy Poetry Performance Competition 2024

  • The Australian Poetry Hall of Fame accepts that “Freedom of speech is imperative” and , in the strongest possible terms, recognises and accepts that at times the inclusion, of content that could be considered offensive to any individual or group, and that the individual poet is responsible for all content submitted. 

  • Competitors have a 7 minute time-slot in which to perform. Penalties will apply if time is exceeded.

  • Competitors are judged on entertainment value, presentation skills and selection of material.

  • Poems that have won first place in a competition should not be performed by the same poet in future years, in the same competition.

  • Competitors in the Final are required to present a different poem. IE. your heat and final poem must be different. 

  • Poems performed in the Comedy Performance Poetry Competition must “performed” I.E. be recited from memory and not read.

  • Poems performed in the Junior Comedy Poetry Competition may be read, but 10 penalty points will apply.

  • Poems performed in the Novice/Guyra Local Bush Poets Class may be read, but 10 penalty points will apply.

  • Entrants reciting must confirm that it is wholly their own work.

  • Judges' decisions are final and discussions are not entered into with the entrant.

Comedy Poetry Written Competition 2024

No limit to number of entries and no line limit to poems 

  • The Australian Poetry Hall of Fame accepts that “Freedom of speech is imperative” and , in the strongest possible terms, recognises and accepts that at times the inclusion, in content that could be considered offensive to any individual or group, and that the individual poet is responsible for all content submitted. 

  • Copies of poems submitted for Competition must not display the name of the Author. 

  • The poem/s must be sent electronically, unless this is not available, in which case they must be presented as follows: typed on white A4 size paper, with black printing in a plain font, size 10-12, with the name of the poem headed on each subsequent page and be numbered and stapled, note: Electronic entry will avoid extra handling and cost by the entrant and avoid the possibility of a late entry due to a delay caused by Australia Post; we will print the number of copies required, at no extra cost.   Poems submitted for Competition will not be returned to the Entrant. 

  • Poems must be the original work of the entrant and must not have been previously published for the profit of the author. 

  • A poem which has come first in any open written competition category is not permitted. If a  poem should win one competition prior to the closing date of another competition in which the same poem is entered, the onus is on the author to notify the second competition organisers that his/her poem has become ineligible due to the contravention of entry conditions. 

  • Copyright on all poems submitted for Competition remains with the Author, and copies of the poem(s) will not be subject to distribution to any outlet without the Author’s permission. 

  • Poems are judged on entertainment value and story-telling methodology.

  • A poem, which in the opinion of the judge contains offensive material, will NOT be disqualified. 

  • Judge’s decisions are final and shall not be disputed. 

  • If a Competitor requires a copy of their Assessment Sheet (after the Winner and Placegetters have been officially announced), they must tick the box below and please add an extra $5 per poem. 

  • Entrants declare that they are the sole author of the original work.
