J S Bach’s monumental St Matthew Passion is considered a pinnacle of western sacred music.
Scored for 3 choirs, 2 orchestras and 6 soloists it is very rarely performed outside our capital cities and is a rare treat for a regional area such as Armidale.
The Passion (meaning ‘suffering or ‘endurance’ in the context of the crucifixion story) tells of Jesus’ betrayal, arrest, judgement and crucifixion in highly dramatic and musical language. It will be sung in English.
More than 60 local musicians will be joined by soloists from Sydney in a performance at 3pm on Saturday 12th April at the Poetry Hall of Fame in Guyra and at 1pm on Passion Sunday 13th April in the Saints Mary and Joseph Cathedral in Armidale.
